Meet the Artist, Carver, Woodworker
Don Bastian
Hailing from Southern Alberta, Don spent childhood summers on the West Coast, where he became captivated by its' beauty and dreamed of relocating to its' shores. For Don, the West Coast had it all, the mystic of his beloved mountains, the ever changing coast lines, treasures delivered daily from the sea and the largest trees in the world to inspire his love of art and woodwork.
Giving in to his love of the West Coast Don now resides on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia Canada. With a background from the Alberta College of Art, it was natural for Don to mix his carpentry skills, experience as a display carpenter for the Hudson Bay Company, with his love of art.
For several years Don and his wife Denise owned and operated the fabled West Coast Wood Designs Gallery in Sidney, B.C., where Don became known as "That Wood Guy in Sidney". Don has since returned to his Sidney home studio, where his work is available by appointment. Don also showcases his carvings in Art Galleries, Art Shows, Special Events and local Venues. Don's furniture, retails displays, carvings andsculptures have won him several Awards and Accolades.
While serving on the Sooke Fine Art Show Board, Don developed an outline and spearheaded a program to bring artist demos and presentations into local high schools. Don has given presentations and demonstrations for several classrooms, art events and non-profit organizations.
Don and his faithful sidekick, Jake, are often found combing the shores for that special piece of driftwood, if you see them stop and stay hello.
